In the Beat: Day One

29 08 2007

One could easily tell by the look in the eyes of most Sunset Park residents that they are not happy with the war in Iraq. Almost everyone’s answer to how they felt about the war in Iraq led to President Bush.
Here are some them:
“Our president is an idiot.”
“He is f**king nuts, put that in capital letters.”
“He is an asshole.” “Will you please put that in big letters?”
“He is too stubborn to give up.”
But then there were some who were not only unhappy with Bush but also with me. Being brown and talking about Iraq might not always go together. But I had not quite imagined that I would meet some intensely “patriotic” people in Sunset Park.

I had almost come to a conclusion that Tennessee was bad; well, New York seems no different.
“What the f**k are you doing in my country?”
“You come to my country, spit in our soil, f**k you.”
“If you don’t like it here, go back to Iraq.”
“Aren’t you from there?”
“You know more than I do about this f**king thing.”
And the one that really opened my senses was:
“If I become the president of the United States, I would pull all our troops back home and send all these immigrants back home.”
and,
“You are in my f**king country, so take your f**king veil off. If you want to live here, live like us.”
But then I thought, if these people are cursing their own president, who happens to be white, and hate him to their guts, I am just a brown man who happens to come from the other side of the world (which is not Iraq).
I guess I can take it.
